Investigated the impact of team based learning (TBL) in an online learning environment to improve health care delivery and promote patient safety.

Project Outcome:

Implementation of Team-Based Learning (TBL) in the NNP program introduced the concepts and skills necessary to build effective teams while promoting student learning. Team-based learning complements the use of evidence based practice. Effectiveness of TBL as a teaching pedagogy in this course will lead to expansion of TBL in other distance education courses.

The Open SUNY Information Literacy Portal provides faculty and librarians a central location for the sharing of best practices in information literacy-related content development as well as a database containing raw files of creative commons-licensed curated instructional materials including videos, online tutorials, lesson plans, assignments, and syllabi. Project Summary:

A partnership to study information resources for evidence-based interprofessional health care decisions (IPE) - developing, testing and evaluating library based innovative technology enhanced team instruction methods.

Project Outcome:

On September 18, 2015, student subjects met their inter-professional for a 2 hour session. Overall reaction of participants to the inter-professional education student event was very positive, and many students indicated that it was an enlightening experience that enabled them to better understand other health sciences professions and provided them with a greater awareness for where there are overlapping interests in care.

Using the ShadowHealth tool, students will interact with a virtual patient in a hospital setting conducting health history and system-based assessments. Student learning outcomes were evaluated through the use of grading rubrics, module summaries, and written transcripts of student activities within the program.

The project demonstrated that positive learning outcomes can be achieved through virtual simulation. Skills and knowledge learned in a virtual environment can be transferred into actual practice and meet the needs of the healthcare community.

Calculus hybrid and flipped module development to support best practices, employ a pre-calculus screening exam for early identification and focused remediation for students with weak skills, and creation of targeted tutorials to keep students "on-track"

Project Outcome:

The classroom model we developed is now being used in all sections of Calculus 1 at Binghamton, and we are developing a process to train instructors in this method. With a little more development, we should be ready to publicize it more broadly and help other institutions adopt it.

Pilots and strengthens cross institutional adoption of e-Portfolio initiatives on participating campuses through creating a Cross-Cultural Experiential Learning Evaluation Toolkit to improve the development and assessment of international experiential learning activities

Project Outcome:

The Toolkit provides guidance to faculty to create and deliver appropriate international experiential learning activities that strengthen students’ cross-cultural skills while they are engaged in international experiences. The Toolkit also provides guidance to faculty to coach their students to document their learning artifacts and to produce effective reflection pieces to appear in their e-Portfolios. The Toolkit is expected to be piloted in COIL courses, study abroad experiences, faculty-led trips, in-class curricular efforts, and international service learning experiences.

Project Summary:

E-portfolio training to veterans returning as students that integrates writing, video editing and information literacy. The project will strengthen student academic engagement and result in individualized electronic presentations fort job interviews or college transfer.

Project Outcome:

Our student veterans are quite similar in learning styles to our other students in that it is hard to get students to complete assignments that are not for a specific class. However, student veterans are very attentive and appreciative of programs designed for them, and the laptops obtained for this grant have been invaluable.

Project Summary:

A pilot course to study effectiveness of collaborative international online learning later combined with a ten-day business study tour in Turkey. Before and after the trip, students engaged in learning activities via an online learning platform.

Project Outcome:

Our 2013 Synergy & Systemness Project was more successful than we had anticipated. Although the construction of the online course presented challenges, we were ultimately able to develop a highly interactive course. As planned, students were able to work online, synchronously and asynchronously, across campuses and across the world. In addition, workgroups used wiki technology to develop final projects that drew upon learning that took place in Turkey during our field study.

Template creation to support transforming beginning-level courses from traditional, face-to-face teaching/learning formats to a hybrid, Quia-powered online model. Includes adopting ACTFL-based proficiency measurements to the design of learning outcomes, curricula, and paradigms for assessing the effectiveness of hybrid learning in four foreign language skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading.

Project Outcome:

Evaluation report and presentation of three semester pilot measuring hybrid effectiveness indicated that STAMP measures could not predictably indicate proficiency, but a significant majority (73%) of students valued that the hybrid format provided them the ability to tailor some of their own learning according to their professional interests and learning needs.

Pilot exploration of e-textbook adoption to assess the impact of price on e-textbook adoption and investigating the feasibility of a student-centered e-textbook model.

443 student pilot over 6 courses and 3 LMS indicated that e-Textbooks from publishers held promise but lacked flexibility and accessibility. 63% of students accessed via laptops, 16% on desktops, 11% during test phase on mobile devices. Complete data available.

Pilot the Tools of Engagement Project’s (TOEP) on-demand professional development model among faculty across SUNY campuses, investigating its effectiveness in expanding their pedagogy as they integrate free online Web 2.0 tools into their courses and research.

TOEP has transitioned from a $10,000 IITG award to a fully scaled SUNY Center for Professional Development offering in addition their website. Several publications have resulted, including the 2015 NMC Horizon Report Higher Education Edition.
