Interested in Teaching Online?
This course is designed to introduce you to teaching online – the concepts, competencies, pedagogies, and practices that are required to plan, develop, and teach an online course. Along with introducing you to these key topics, this course will showcase the perspectives of students, faculty, and instructional designers who have a wide range of experience teaching and learning online.

Welcome

Throughout this course you will have opportunities to connect in conversation with your peers, and meet mentors from the Open SUNY online teaching community who can help you along your learning journey.

GOALS

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine if you have the prerequisite skills, knowledge, attitudes, and support to be successful teaching online.
  • Define common terms related to online teaching and learning.
  • Identify core competencies needed to teach online.
  • Explain the value of applied effective online teaching practices.
  • Evaluate the benefits and affordances of teaching online.
  • Determine if online teaching is right for you.
  • Locate and participate in the Open SUNY Community of Practice.

LEARNING JOURNEY MILESTONES

This course has four key lesson areas, which you can work through in two different ways:

The Mapped Out Journey

Each lesson in this course has an established list of Things to Do and Review. The subject areas can be accessed, and activities completed out of order, but you will still need to reach set milestones on the list of Things to Do and Review to earn badges and a course completion certificate.

The Meandering Way

If you choose to follow this approach, you will be exploring the course and associated resources on your own. There’s no set pathway that you need to follow, and no milestones to reach. Just an open learning landscape for you to explore.

Lesson 3

Ready to teach online?

Lesson 1

Definitions,
categories,
and perspectives.

Lesson 2

Skills, tools, and approaches.

Lesson 4

Planning, development, and delivery.

The Open SUNY Center for Online Teaching and Learning (COTE) is a vibrant community of practice where you can connect with peers and participate in a wide range of online conversations and dialogue. We encourage you to explore these conversations and opportunities for mentorships as you determine if online teaching is right for you.

ASSESSMENTS

As you progress through this course, you will have the opportunity to check your understanding through a series of short quizzes. There are no grades associated with these quizzes, but we encourage you to take these quizzes and review the associated feedback to help you better understand key concepts as you progress.

Badges

Each lesson in this course has an established list of Things to Do and Review. The subject areas can be accessed, and activities completed out of order, but you will still need to reach set milestones on the list of Things to Do and Review to earn a course completion badge.
