Adding a Rubric to an Assignment/Forum in Blackboard
Adding a rubric helps faculty members articulate their expectations for assignments. Including a rubric also contributes to better work from students. Adding a rubric in Blackboard can be done for most assignments, and it can be saved for future classes and assignments.
What is a Rubric?
A rubric is a grading tool that communicates expectations, procedures, and feedback to students. Adding a rubric to an assignment in Blackboard allows students to plan for expectations, and it encourages them to plan their assignments according to the score levels. A student who follows a rubric can predict their own score and understand their grade.
Where to Add a Rubric
When adding a rubric in an online course, you can apply it to most assignments and forums. Professors and lecturers can add a rubric in Blackboard to:

5 Steps for Adding a Rubric in Blackboard
1. Add to an Assignment
When creating an assignment, under Settings, select Grading. Next, click on the Add Rubric button for Associated Rubrics then Select Rubric.
When creating a forum, navigate to Edit Forum. From here, select Grade. Once you check the option for Grade Discussion Forum: Points Possible, the option for Associated Rubrics will appear.
2. Preview the Rubric
Check the rubric and click Submit. The icon next to the name allows you to preview the rubric.
3. Choose a Rubric Type
Once submitted, the rubric will appear on the settings page.
The three icons that appear first allow you to remove the rubric, preview, or edit.
Professors and lecturers use Type options for either Grading or Used for Secondary Evaluation.
The Show Rubric to student has three options:
- Yes (with Rubric Scores) displays the rubric to students when the item is available, including all grading information.
- Yes (without Rubric Scores) shows students the rubric with the item is available, but it does not include grading information.
- After Grading shows the students the rubric and grading information after the instructor grades the submission.
4. Submit the Rubric
After the settings for the rubric and other settings for the item are filled out, click Submit. Submitting attaches the rubric to the Blackboard assignment. The students will now see the rubric in Blackboard.
5. Students View the Rubric
If you want students to view the rubric, make sure the settings are set to Show Rubric. When students open an assignment, they can open Assignment Information. This area shows the points possible, as well as provides them the option to view the rubric.
When a student opens a forum, if the option to show rubric is selected, they will see a button for Grading Information on the top of the forum. When they click this button, on the right-hand side, there will be an icon to display the rubric.
