Copying a Course in Blackboard
Copying a course from one section to another for an online class will bring over the course content to reuse. Copying a course will not overwrite the existing structure of the new course, it will append to what is currently there.
To start the copy process, navigate to the course with the content that you want to copy from. In this course, on the Course Menu, under Course Management, click on Packages and Utilities and then Course Copy (if you do not see this option you may need to do a course export and import).
On the Copy Course page:
Select Course Type: The option for Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course should already be selected. This will copy content from the course you are working in into a course that will be selected in the next step.
Select Copy Options: To select which course the content will be copied into, click on Browse for Destination Course ID. A list of courses you are listed as an instructor can be selected from to copy into (only can select one course at a time). After selecting the course, click Submit at the top or bottom of the window.
Select Course Materials: A full course copy will require clicking Select All. We recommend keeping Discussion Board checked and changing the option underneath to “Include only the forums, with no started posts.” This will bring over the forums but will not include any posts. If you use forums and as the instructor provide the starter posts (students can only reply), keep the option to “Include starter posts for each thread in each forum (anonymized).”
File Attachments: This option will determine how file attachments will copy into the new course:
Copy links to Course Files: (not recommended) Copies of the linked files are not included in the copy process. This means that the links for files will point back to the original location in the course it was copied from. Choosing this option can prevent students in the current course from accessing these files since they do not have access to the original course.
Copy links and copies of the content: (recommended) Copies of the linked files will be created. Only the files that are linked will be copied. Files within the course’s home folder that are not linked to content in the course are not included in the copy.
Copy links and copies of the content (include entire course home folder): (recommended) All file in the course’s home folder will be copied, even if they are not linked to the course content.
Your campus determines the option selected. We recommend you keep the selection as it appears.
Enrollments: (not recommended) You will not want to copy the enrollments from one course to another. The new course will be populated with the new students for the semester. The campus will add enrollments to the courses.
Submit to start the copy process. You can navigate to the new course shell and the banner across the top will indicate that the process is first Waiting then Running and then will change to Complete. After the copy is Complete, click on a menu item or the browser’s refresh button to view the new content. We recommend checking the content, discussions, and grade center to make sure everything looks okay. Adjustments to dates, wording on items or set up may need to happen for the new semester.
